Most moving-day stress comes from small things left too late. This checklist spreads the work out so the last few days are calm.
Four weeks out
- Get your moving quote and confirm your date
- Decide what you're packing yourself and what you want packed for you
- Start clearing out: sell, donate or toss what you don't want to move
- Check your new building's rules on move hours, elevators and parking
Two weeks out
- Set up utilities and internet at the new home, and schedule shutoff at the old one
- Update your address with USPS, your bank and your employer
- Pack rooms you rarely use: guest rooms, storage, out-of-season clothes
- Use up frozen and pantry food
One week out
- Pack everything but daily essentials
- Label boxes with the room they go to at the new home
- Take photos of the back of your TV and electronics before unplugging them
- Confirm arrival time and both addresses with your movers
The day before
- Pack an essentials bag: medications, chargers, documents, a change of clothes
- Defrost and dry the freezer if it's moving
- Take beds apart, or confirm your movers are handling it
- Clear a path through each room and reserve parking for the truck if you can
Move day
- Do a final walkthrough with the crew before they load
- Keep valuables, documents and medications with you
- Check every room, closet and cabinet before you leave
